An Illinois man who participated in the Capitol riot admitted assaulting a journalist and a police officer there, the Department of Justice announced Friday.
44-year-old Shane Jason Woods pleaded guilty in a DC federal court, per the department's announcement.
He admitted one felony count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding police and a misdemeanor count related to hitting the reporter, who was working for Reuters.
Woods — from Auburn, Illinois — faces between 33 to 41 months in prison, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta said, according to Reuters. His sentencing is due to take place in January 2023.
The charging documents and statement of offense said that Woods rammed his body into a police officer who had just been sprayed in the face with bear mace.
The officer said that the impact led to her crashing into a downed bicycle barricade, resulting in pain that felt like being "hit by a truck."
Per the documents, Woods then walked over to the media staging area of the US capitol, where he saw a Reuters cameraman.
Woods ran to him before shoulder-tackling the cameraman to the ground, causing him to drop his camera, the documents said.
The documents cited YouTube videos of Woods carrying out the attacks. It said he was wearing a Trump hat and face mask.
According to the Department of Justice, over 870 people have been arrested in crimes related to Capitol riot, with more than 265 charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement.
