Canada says Americans can always get abortion pills up north if the Supreme Court kills access

The Canadian government is ready to offer abortion pills to Americans if the US Supreme Court restricts access to the drug.

"We remain very committed to making sure that we can support American women if they need that access here," Canada's Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development Karina Gould said in an interview with CTV's Power Play.

Access to mifepristone — which is used in most abortions in the US — has been suddenly challenged after a Texas judge decided to roll back the FDA's approval of the pill from 20 years ago.

That decision has been on pause as the Supreme Court considers whether to allow restrictions on the drug. The Supreme Court's decision is expected on Friday.

Gould told CTV on Thursday that while Canada does not currently have a large enough supply of mifepristone pills to go around, the government is working on getting more of the drug. But Gould said Canada will need to be careful since some US states are preparing to prosecute Americans who leave their borders to get access.

"What concerns me," Gould told CTV, "is where you see laws in states where they're actually criminalizing women [who] cross state borders to access reproductive health care."

Gould added that the Canadian government needs to be "very thoughtful" about extending abortion access to Americans "to make sure that we don't further endanger American women who are seeking access to reproductive health care and services, as well as health-care providers."
