Burkina Faso's military seized power in a coup Monday, dissolving the government, closing the borders, and suspending the constitution hours after troops detained the country's president, according to multiple reports.

Army officials announced on state television that the military had taken power, according to the BBC.

The military also arrested President Roch Kabore, who has faced protests in recent months over the West African nation's failure to stem an Islamic militant insurgency, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Kabore has also faced criticism over allegations of corruption and poor economic policy, The Journal said.

According to AFP, the military also announced the country would close its borders.
