Brittney Griner is 'getting appropriate mental health care' in Texas for 'reintegration back into American society,' White House says

Brittney Griner is receiving mental and physical health care in Texas after arriving back on American soil last week, a White House spokesperson said Sunday.

After nine months in Russian custody, Griner touched down in San Antonio, Texas early Friday morning. The WNBA star was flown to the US Army's Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, where she was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center for treatment, according to The New York Times.

Griner is "getting appropriate both mental healthcare as well as physical health care just to make sure that she's ready for her reintegration back into American society," White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said on "This Week" on ABC News.

"They'll work that out with the doctors and the family as to how much longer she'll need to be there, but our initial reports are she's in very good spirits and in good health," Kirby said.

Griner was detained in Moscow in February after officials said she had cannabis oil in her luggage. In August, she was found guilty of drug smuggling and given a 9-year sentence in a penal colony, until the US agreed to a prisoner swap last week, Insider previously reported.
