- A Russian dissident group who took credit for attacks last month hinted that there's more to come.
- The Liberty of Russia Legion said it will soon reenter Russia, to bring "freedom, peace, and calm."
A group of Russian dissidents who oppose President Vladimir Putin said it would soon launch another incursion onto Russian soil, in order to liberate the country.
In a Telegram post on Thursday, the Liberty of Russia Legion said that it was "near the border of our homeland," according to CNN's translation.
"Very soon we will advance again into Russian territory to bring freedom, peace, and calm. We are going to liberate the whole of Russia — from Belgorod to Vladivostok," it said, referring to cities in the far west and east of the country.
The group is actively against Putin, and has taken responsibility for recent attacks in Russia's Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine.
The Liberty of Russia Legion has described Putin as a dictator leading a tyrannical regime, and as someone who kills Russians who oppose him. It is also against the invasion of Ukraine, and has called for other Russians to join the group.
The group's post came shortly after Belgorod's governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said that shelling in the region had injured four people and damaged multiple buildings on Wednesday. No one has so far taken responsibility.
The group claimed responsibility last week for an attack on the Russian border region of Belgorod, alongside the Russian Volunteer Corps. Experts describe the latter as being a far-right, neo-Nazi group made up of Russians who are opposed to Putin.
Last week, Russia said that a series of attacks in the region killed civilians and damaged buildings. The Liberty of Russia Legion said on May 22 that it had carried out the "liberation" of several villages in the area.
Russia said that more than 70 militants were killed in the fighting. The figure has not been verified.
Reuters reported that the group says it "cooperates with the Ukrainian armed forces and operates under Ukrainian command."
But Ukraine denied any responsibility for the raids or attacks on Belgorod, and a former advisor to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack was done "exclusively by citizens of Russia."
Ukraine says the group is made up entirely of dissident Russians.
Russia, meanwhile, has continued its missile and drone strikes on Ukraine. Three people were killed in Kyiv on Thursday, including a child and her mother, according to Ukrainian officials.
