- A Florida thrift shop was selling a real human skull for $4,000.
- An anthropologist immediately spotted the relic and police were called to the scene.
An anthropologist shopping at a Florida thrift store stumbled upon a spooky find just days after Halloween.
The shopper immediately clocked a human skull priced at $,4,000 sitting in a glass display at Paradise Vintage Market in North Fort Myers, Florida, according to media reports.
Police were called to the thrift store on Saturday where detectives with the Lee County Sheriff's Office observed the skull and ultimately concluded that the skull was, in fact, likely human.
Beth Meyer, a managing partner at the thrift store, told The Washington Post this week that she didn't think customers would be creeped out by the prominently placed and very real skull in the store.
Meyer told multiple media outlets she knew the skull was real because she frequently handles fossils and bones.
Although it's a first-degree misdemeanor to sell human remains in Florida, the sheriff's office made no mention of any pending legal charges and said the case is not suspicious in nature.
Authorities even touted the incident in a punny Facebook post on Saturday which describes the discovery as "not-so-humerus."
Meyer told authorities she and her business partner had no idea they were purchasing the skull when they bought a storage unit from a man in September 2022, according to reports.
She told The Post she priced the skull at $4,000 because she "figured no one would buy it."
The eagle-eyed anthropologist told authorities the skull was possibly that of a Native American, The Post reported, citing an incident report.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office said it was working in conjunction with the medical examiner's office to facilitate further testing of the skull.
In September, an "ancient" human skull was included in a box of donations dropped off at a Goodwill store in Arizona.
