  • A Utah couple raised $12,000 from TikTok users to help out their local Papa John's delivery man, 89-year-old Derlin Newey.
  • Carlos Valdez and his wife posted a video of their friendly and chatty delivery driver to TikTok, and many people responded.
  • On Tuesday, they presented him with $12,000 in cash, and Newey broke down in tears.
  • Newey said he started delivering pizza about 30 hours a week because his social security benefits weren't enough to cover his bills.

An 89-year-old pizza delivery man in Utah got a gift of $12,000 this week after TikTok users banded together to help him, local news channel KSL reported.

Derlin Newey, who works at the Papa John's Pizza in Roy, won hearts on the social network after a local couple recorded their friendly and chatty interactions with the delivery driver.

Carlos Valdez said his followers on TikTok wanted to help the man out, since many were worried to see him still working.

"Somebody at that age should not be working that much," Valdez told KSL.

So on Tuesday, Valdez and his wife went to visit Newey, where they presented him with $12,000 in donations from their fellow TikTok users.

Newey, who didn't know what TikTok was until that morning, was left speechless.

"How do I ever say thank you? I don't know what to say," Newey said, as he started to cry.

He told the Valdezes that he started working about 30 hours a week at Papa John's because social security wasn't covering all of his bills. He currently lives alone in a mobile home park.

"This couldn't have gone any better," Valdez said. "He needed this. I'm just glad we could help him. We just need to treat people with kindness and respect the way he does. He stole our hearts."
