  • Prince William hosted an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on Wednesday.
  • The event marked the Prince of Wales' first royal engagement since King Charles' cancer diagnosis.

The Prince of Wales has returned to work.

On Wednesday, Prince William, 41, oversaw an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, presenting awards to people on behalf of the royal family, Kensington Palace confirmed to Business Insider.

The Prince and Princess of Wales posted a series of photos of William at the event on Instagram, captioning the post, "Honouring amazing people doing incredible things in our communities up and down the country."

The ceremony marked William's first royal engagement in weeks, as he paused his work amid multiple health issues in the monarchy.

On January 17, Kensington Palace announced Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, underwent a "planned abdominal surgery" and that she would probably be recovering until after Easter.

Then, on Monday, Buckingham Palace revealed King Charles had been diagnosed with an unspecified type of cancer and started "a schedule of regular treatments" in a statement shared with BI. The palace said the king, 75, will still perform his State duties while he undergoes treatment, but he will "postpone public-facing duties."

William is first in line for the throne, so experts anticipated he would be the royal who steps up most while his father cannot attend public royal engagements, particularly since Kate, 42, is unable to help for the time being.

"I think you'll see William do more," Eric Schiffer, the chairman of Reputation Management Consultants, said. "It's an opportunity for him to communicate on behalf of the royal family."

In addition, King Charles and Queen Elizabeth II trained William throughout his life to be monarch someday, so the Prince of Wales is likely well prepared to step in for his father while he gets treatment.

William's appearance also comes after Prince Harry visited Charles on Tuesday amid his diagnosis, but the brothers — who have had a rift in their relationship for years — did not see each other, according to CNN.
