Lawyer Alan Dershowitz is suing Netflix over its portrayal of a rape allegation against him in a docuseries about Jeffrey Epstein.
In a lawsuit first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Dershowitz accuses Netflix and the producers of "Filthy Rich" of creating a "deliberately one-sided narrative."
The four-part documentary series, called "Filthy Rich," features stories from women who have accused the late financier of using his power to abuse them. The series was added to Netflix in late May of last year.
One of the women featured in the documentary, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, has claimed she had sex with Dershowitz on several occasions - a claim Dershowitz denies. The 41-page lawsuit filed by Dershowitz denounces the series' coverage of the incident as a "he said/she/said situation."
"It wasn't a 'he said/she said' situation, however, given Professor Dershowitz's totality of the evidence establishing he never had sex with Giuffre," the complaint reads. "To have presented that evidence in 'Filthy Rich,' as had been promised, would have undercut the credibility of Brad Edwards, Sigrid McCawley and Giuffre - the very people whose interviewed comments 'Filthy Rich' depended upon."
Dershowitz was involved in negotiating a criminal plea bargain for Epstein in 2019. Epstein died by suicide in July 2019 while awaiting trial on charges related to exploiting dozens of young girls.
Guiffre and Dershowitz have been locked in a legal battle since 2019 after they sued each other for defamation over the alleged incident, with Dershowitz denying the allegations and calling Giuffre a liar in the wake of the accusation.
"I welcome the unsealing of more records and a thorough investigation of all the allegations," Dershowitz said in late July of last year, "and I am confident they will prove what I already know for certainty: that Virginia Giuffre is a serial liar who has deliberately made up stories about me and others in the hopes of cashing in on millions of dollars."
In a statment to Insider, a Netflix spokesperson said: "Mr. Dershowitz's lawsuit is without merit, and we will vigorously defend our partners and the series."
