3 student athletes killed on a school bus in a University of Virginia campus shooting have been identified
- A shooting at the University of Virginia left three people dead, police said.
- Two other students were injured; one is stable, and the other is in critical condition.
Three students were killed and two others were injured in a Sunday night shooting at the University of Virginia and the suspected shooter, a fellow student, was taken into custody roughly 12 hours later, police said.
UVA Police Chief Tim Longo learned during a press conference Monday morning that the suspect had been captured.
"We just received information the suspect is in custody," Longo told reporters during the briefing before pausing for several seconds. "I just need a moment to thank God and breathe a sigh of relief."
The suspect was arrested in Henrico County, Virginia — over an hour's drive away from UVA, Henrico County police said.
The suspect has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony, police said Monday.
University President Jim Ryan confirmed in a statement Monday morning that the suspect is a student at the school.
The suspect's name and image match the university's athletics profile of a former UVA football player who was part of the team in 2018, officials said. No motive has been reported.
The shooting happened on a school bus near a campus parking garage around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. The students were returning from a field trip to see a play in Washington, D.C., police said.
Officers said on Sunday the suspected shooter fled and was wearing a burgundy jacket, blue jeans with red shoes, and was driving a black SUV with Virginia plates.
Authorities identified the victims of the shooting spree as Devin Chandler from Virginia Beach, Virginia, Lavel Davis Jr. from Ridgeville, South Carolina, and D'Sean Perry from Miami, Florida. They were all members of the school's football team, police said.
Two other students were injured in the shooting spree and both are being treated at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Ryan said. One of the students is in good condition, he added. The other is in critical condition.
"My heart is broken for the victims and their families and all those who knew and loved them and they are all in my prayers," Ryan said at a Monday press conference.
"When I see our students, I see my own kids, and I cannot imagine anything worse for a parent than to lose a child," Ryan continued. "We will do everything we can to honor their lives and will come together soon as a community to mourn these losses."
The campus emergency alert system warned students the suspect was "armed and dangerous" and told them to shelter in place. Police said approximately 500 students were sheltered in campus classrooms and libraries.
The University announced the shelter-in-place order had been lifted at 10:33 a.m. Monday but a large police presence will remain on campus. Longo said at the time the order was lifted they were confident the suspect was nowhere on campus.
"The UVA shelter in place order has been lifted based upon a thorough search on and around Grounds. A large police presence will remain," UVA's Emergency Management Twitter posted.
Ryan also confirmed in his statement that UVA has canceled classes for Monday.
He wrote: "This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia." All sports and extracurricular activities have been canceled, too.
A video shared on Twitter shortly after midnight appeared to show a SWAT team entering a building. UVA officials said multiple agencies deployed officers in the search, and that Virginia State Police deployed a helicopter.
A UVA spokesperson told Insider the school had no additional information to share.
