A 32-year-old woman who was seven months pregnant was fatally shot while bringing gifts into her home after her baby shower, authorities say.

The police say the incident happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. in Philadelphia on Saturday, CBSPhilly reported.

When responding officers arrived at the scene, they discovered that the unidentified woman was shot in the head and the stomach, according to the report.

The police said that the woman was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead and that her unborn child did not survive, WPVI reported.

The Philadelphia Police Department's deputy commissioner, Christine Coulter, told reporters the person responsible for the shooting "couldn't be more cowardly."

Authorities have said that the killing appeared to be targeted but that they are still seeking to identify a motive as well as the number of people involved, according to ABC News.

Mayor Jim Kenney said the shooting was "deeply upsetting" and "heartbreaking."

Kenney said the city was offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

CBSPhilly noted that Philadelphia had experienced a harrowing number of homicides this year, with the police saying that women and children were increasingly among the victims.
