A Ukrainian councilor set off grenades in a meeting over an apparent pay dispute, video shows

A village councilor in Ukraine detonated three grenades during a meeting, injuring at least 26 people, reports say.

The incident took place during a meeting over next year's budget in the village of Keretsky, western Ukraine, the Kyiv Independent reported.

A video shows a man in a dark suit entering the meeting room and standing by the door as a heated discussion takes place between his colleagues.

He shouts to try to get people's attention, before taking three grenades out of his pockets and calmly tossing them on the floor.

The grenades explode, causing panic as attendees scream and duck for cover.

Local media identified the man as Serhii Batryn, a council member from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Servant of the People party.

During an earlier part of the meeting, Batryn had argued with fellow councilors because he disagreed with giving a wartime pay increase to the head of the village council, according to local outlet Zakarpattia24.

He then left the room before returning and setting off the grenades, per the outlet.

Local police said that 26 people were injured, six critically, according to Zakarpattia24.

Police initially said that the councilor died in the attack, but they later clarified that he was still alive but hospitalized in serious condition.

Ukraine's Security Service will investigate the incident as a terror attack, Zakarpattia24 reported.

Batryn could face up to 10 years in prison, according to the outlet.
