A sheriff's deputy in North Carolina fatally shot a man on Wednesday morning, the Pasquotank Sheriff's Office confirmed.

Pasquotank Sheriff Tommy S. Wooten II said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon that the shooting happened while deputies were carrying out a search warrant in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He identified the victim as Andrew Brown Jr.

The sheriff's deputy who shot Brown has been put on administrative leave pending an investigation. Wooten said the deputy was wearing a body camera at the time of the shooting and his office has the footage.

Witnesses told WAVY that the man who was shot had gotten into his car to drive away, and a sheriff's deputy opened fire. Neighbors told the local news station that they heard six to eight gun shots.

Neither the victim nor the sheriff's deputy has been identified by officials. Pasquotank Sheriff's Office didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for further information.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.

"The sheriff's office has complete trust in the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and its ability to complete this investigation," Wooten said at the press conference.
