A nursing home in Rockland County, New York, collapsed after a raging inferno blazed for hours early Tuesday morning, killing one resident and a firefighter.
The fire broke out at the Evergreen Court home in Spring Valley, New York, just after 1 a.m. on Tuesday. It's unclear how many residents were living at the senior-care and assisted-living facility at the time of the blaze, but more than 100 people had to be evacuated on Tuesday morning, the Rockland/Westchester Journal News reported.
One resident died at the hospital following the fire, and several others were injured, according to ABC7 New York. Another resident who was unaccounted for on Tuesday morning was found uninjured on Tuesday afternoon, according to NBC New York reporter Steve Bognar.
A firefighter, identified by Evergreen Court as Jared Lloyd, also died in the blaze.
According to CNN, Lloyd was trying to rescue someone from the third floor when he got lost and issued a mayday call.
Rockland County Director of Fire and Emergency Services Chris Kear told ABC7 they were searching through the rubble for his body all day on Tuesday.
"With the extent of the fire and the volume of fire, the conditions were just too unbearable where firefighters went in, and they just could not locate the firefighter, and they had to back out," Kear told CNN.
Lloyd's body was recovered on Wednesday morning, CBS New York reported.
"We offer our deepest condolences and prayers to the family of Jared Lloyd, the brave firefighter who tragically lost his life Tuesday morning," Evergreen Court said in a statement shared with Insider. "Words cannot express the pain they must feel at this time. We hope they take comfort in knowing their son is a true hero whose bravery and courage saved countless lives."
Two firefighters were also reported injured and are expected to recover, CNN reported Kear as saying. Another firefighter suffered a heart attack and was being treated in hospital, Trooper Steven Nevel of New York State Police told CNN.
It's unclear what caused the blaze. It started at around 1:40 a.m., NBC New York cited authorities as saying. It continued until at least 6.45 a.m., according to ABC7 New York's Derek Waller and NBC New York's Tracie Strahan.
The Monsey Fire Department has declined to provide further comment.
Glenn Schuck of 1010 WINS shared footage of the scene around 7 a.m.:
Around 5 a.m. he tweeted that only one side of one of the structures had been left standing:
Earlier in the night eyewitness Mark Kennedy told Insider that the fire had been "raging" and that the building was "completely destroyed."
"The fire was probably raging for around two hours, or maybe more, before the building caved in," Kennedy said.
An ABC news report said that a portion of the facility fell through as firefighters were battling the flames, trapping one firefighter inside. He has since been accounted for and is being treated, along with some residents rescued from the home.
According to the media outlet Belaaz, the New York City Fire Department, along with helicopter assistance, were called to help fight the blaze. Firefighters from as far away as North Jersey have also been called to the scene. Volunteers from Hatzolah, the Jewish emergency medical service, also attended, according to ABC New York.
News site YidInfo reported that school buses were mobilized to help ferry elderly patients who had made it out of the home care facility away from the site.
According to Twitter posts, some seniors evacuated from the facility were being taken to the Golden Acre Rest Home in Spring Valley, a five-minute drive from Evergreen Court.
Denise Kerr, Director of the Evergreen Court Home for Adults, told Insider that all 112 residents at Evergreen Court Home have been accounted for and placed in a new home.
"This is an unspeakable tragedy at Evergreen Court Home and our hearts and prayers go out to all individuals and families who have been impacted. We join the community in mourning the loss of our resident who passed away and pray for the safety of the missing firefighter," Kerr said. At the time of the statement, Lloyd's body had not been recovered.
She added that the home was fully cooperating with state and local authorities to investigate the fire, and were conducting their own internal investigation as well.
"Our staff was truly heroic in evacuating residents who were inside the building as the fire spread, and we are forever grateful to the first responders whose actions undoubtedly saved lives," she said.
Rockland County is in upstate New York, about 45 minutes from New York City. It has a large Orthodox Jewish community.
