  • A man with an ax and a sword tried to enter The New York Times' newsroom on Thursday.
  • The New York Police Department told the AP the man wanted to see The Times' politics journalists.

A man with an ax and a sword tried to get into The New York Times' Manhattan office building on Thursday, police told Insider.

The New York Police Department confirmed to Insider that a 27-year-old man found his way into the lobby of the newspaper's 8th Avenue office building while carrying a "plastic bag with a knife, sword, and ax." He wanted to speak to the outlet's political journalists, the NYPD told The Associated Press.

The man then handed over his weapons after he was denied entry and was later taken to the hospital for evaluation, NYPD told Insider.

A spokesperson for The Times told Insider they were grateful to the NYPD "for responding to an incident in our lobby that was resolved quickly and peacefully."
