A brewery in Freeport, Maine, canceled an event on Wednesday after the owners said they weren't aware it was an official Trump campaign event and received negative comments, the Bangor Daily News reported.

The owners of Stars and Stripes Brewing, Brad and Nancy Nadeau, told the newspaper that they had been told that some campaign members and Lara Trump, the president's daughter-in-law, would visit the brewery for beers and get pizza from a nearby restaurant.

But they said they were surprised to see the brewery included in the Trump campaign's online event listings as the first stop on a "Women for Trump" bus tour. The owners told the newspaper that Stars and Stripes Brewing did not promote political candidates or host political events.

Brad Nadeau, a Marine veteran who served in Iraq, said that after receiving backlash, he called the campaign on Tuesday to cancel the event. He said he planned to close the brewery on Wednesday.

"I tried so hard to keep this brewery positive, and we haven't had any backlash because we don't do anything that's negative," he told the Daily News. "But when it comes to politics, people are so far on either side."

A Trump campaign press release listed the event's new location as Jimmy the Greek's, a restaurant in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
