As it becomes more clear that children will not be headed back to class this year, some parents are wondering how they're going to keep them entertained throughout a summer in lockdown.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former head of the Food and Drug Administration, shared his plans for safe parenting this summer with CNBC.

Basically, as long as the coronavirus stops spreading at "epidemic levels," he plans to let his three kids play with other children and see their grandparents.

If "my kids are otherwise fine - they're healthy, they don't have temperatures, they don't have colds - I'm not going to be concerned about them being around my parents, who are older," Gottlieb said on Squawk Box. "But I'm going to be more vigilant to make sure they don't have colds."

Gottlieb, a physician by training, left his post at FDA about a year ago. He's now a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a special partner at the investment firm NEA. He said earlier this month that he didn't believe life would return to normal by summer.

In his interview with CNBC, Gottlieb said that people will have to "contemplate very carefully" whether they should interact with older individuals or people who have compromised immune systems and may be more at risk of the virus.

While people will "have to start living our lives again," frequent hand washing, no handshakes, and reducing travel will likely become routine behaviors, he told CNBC.

People may also get in the habit of frequently taking their temperature, Gottlieb said.

"I think people are going to come out of this sufficiently concerned about the spread of this virus, that it is going to change behaviors in a way that are subtle for everyone but .. on the whole is going to reduce the risk of spread," he told CNBC.
