What would you name an all-white alligator, given the chance?
Social media users can do just that after the birth of a rare white gator on Thursday at the Gatorland theme park in Orlando. According to a press release shared with Business Insider, the baby gator has Leucism, a condition that causes stark-white coloring.
"This is beyond 'rare,'" Mark McHugh, Gatorland's president and CEO said in the press release. "It is absolutely extraordinary."
Gatorland is now asking its followers to help name the tiny gator, who was born alongside her brother, who has more typical alligator coloring.
So far, hundreds of social media users have offered their input on a name for the white gator and her brother. Some of the most-requested names, shared to Facebook, were Pearl, Marshmallow, Fluffy, and Snowball. Lucy — a play on Leucism — was another popular request.
Other suggestions included Blanche Gatoreaux, Smiley, Grits, Gumbo, and Florida Dog.
According to Gatorland, leucistic alligators are the "rarest genetic variation in the American alligator." The condition is different from albinism in that albino alligators have pink eyes, whereas leucistic gators have vibrant blue eyes. Leucistic gators also often have patches of regular coloration, whereas albino alligators do not.
The leucistic gator and her brother were born to parents Jeyan and Ashley, the press release said. Their father, Jeyan, is leucistic, and their mother, Ashely, has normal coloration.
"These are incredibly special animals in the reptile world, and we are being very careful with their safety and security," McHugh added. "We plan to have them on display early next year so guests can see them, learn about them, and fall in love with them like we have."
