  • Five cars the Secret Service rented on Nantucket were damaged in a fire a day after being returned.
  • Secret Service agents used the cars during President Joe Biden's Thanksgiving trip.

Five cars the Secret Service had rented for President Joe Biden's Nantucket trip were damaged when one caught fire at the Nantucket Memorial Airport early Monday morning after they'd been returned, per media reports.

Anthony Guglielmi, a Secret Service spokesman, told Insider the vehicles were rented from a Hertz outlet at the Nantucket Memorial Airport. Neither Biden nor his family were in the vehicles during their Thanksgiving trip in Nantucket, Guglielmi said, but the cars were used by agents.

"We had no issues when we drove the vehicles, and they were returned without incident," Guglielmi told Insider. "We look forward to following up with local fire authorities on their review of the incident."

The fire occurred less than a day after the agency returned the cars, the Nantucket Current reported. Five cars were heavily damaged in the fire and towed away, the outlet reported: a Chevy Suburban, a Ford Explorer, a Ford Expedition, a Jeep Gladiator, and an Infiniti QX80. Guglielmi told Insider it was one of the Ford SUVs that first caught fire.

The Nantucket Current obtained footage of what appeared to be a blaze engulfing several cars in the parking lot.

Images of the gutted cars were shared on the Nantucket Memorial Airport's Twitter account. The airport confirmed a fire had happened in the rental-car area.

Representatives at the Nantucket Police Department didn't immediately return a request for comment from Insider.
