Stephen Broderick, 41, was arrested Monday morning around 7:30 a.m. in Manor, Texas, a suburb just east of Austin, KXAN reported.

The Austin Police Department and Travis County Sheriff's Office confirmed Broderick's arrest to CBS Austin. Insider has contacted the Austin PD for comment.

According to local reports, Broderick was taken into custody after someone called 911 about a man walking on the side of the road. He was taken into custody without incident.

Manor Police told KXAN that Broderick had a pistol on him when he was arrested, but no shots were fired.

The arrest came about 20 hours after the police said Broderick killed two women and a man Sunday morning.

The shooting took place around 11:42 a.m. Sunday, the Austin-Travis County EMS reported Sunday.

The victims

A total of three people - two women and a man - were pronounced dead at the scene, the service reported.

A child was also involved in the incident, but was unharmed and is in police custody, authorities said.

Police have not officially named the victims. However, the Elgin Independent School District released a statement Monday morning identifying two of the victims as Alyssa Broderick and Willie Simmons III, according to Fox 7 Austin.

Elgin ISD Superintendent Dr. Jodi Duron wrote in the statement that Alyssa Broderick was "an excellent student and athlete" who attended the Early College High School program before withdrawing in October 2020. She played basketball, Duron said.

Simmons was a senior at Elgin High School. He was the first victim to be identified after sources at the University of North Texas, where Simmons had been recruited to play college football next year, told the Denton Record-Chronicle of his death.

Duron said that Simmons was "an exceptional young man and leader among his peers."

"Strong both academically and athletically, he represented the very best of Elgin ISD."

UNT tight-end coach Adrian Mayes tweeted Sunday that he was praying for the Simmons family.

"What an unbelievable kid! Intelligent, hard working and passionate! Going to miss you! #RIP9" Mayes wrote.

Broderick's history

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Broderick resigned from the Travis County Sheriff's office last year after he was arrested on a charge of sexual assault of a minor.

Broderick's wife filed for divorce and a protective order after his arrest, the Statesman first reported, citing court documents.

Interim Austin Police Chief Joe Chacon described the shooting as a "domestic incident" and said that the victims were known to the shooter. Chacon did not describe the relationship between Broderick and the victims.
