Los Angeles police fatally shot a 14-year-old girl in a Burlington Coat Factory while firing at a male suspect
- Two people were killed, including a male suspect and a 14-year-old, at a Hollywood department store.
- Authorities said one of the bullets went through a changing room wall and struck the teenage girl.
Los Angeles police fatally shot a 14-year-old girl inside a Burlington Coat Factory dressing room on Thursday when they opened fire on a male suspect inside the North Hollywood store.
The shooting suspect was also killed in the police shooting, authorities said.
Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded just before noon to a report of a man committing an assault with a deadly weapon inside the store.
When they arrived, "officers encountered the suspect, who was in the process of assaulting another person," Officer Drake Madison told Insider. Police then opened fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
At a second press conference on Thursday, LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi said one of the bullets went through a changing room wall and hit the 14-year-old girl.
"You can't see into the dressing rooms and it just looks like a straight wall of drywall," Choi said.
Authorities said they don't know if the girl was in the dressing room prior to the incident or if she took cover in the changing room amid the shooting.
Police confirmed the suspect had a bike chain or lock he was possibly using as a weapon but did not have a gun on him.
Choi added that police don't yet know the suspect's motive or if he knew the woman he assaulted prior to the encounter in the store.
The woman who was assaulted was transported to a hospital for moderate-to-severe injuries sustained during the attack, police said.
When LAPD officers open fire, internal inquiries, as well as an investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, is triggered, according to NBC News.
Police said they plan to review surveillance footage amid an ongoing investigation.
A representative for Burlington Coat Factory said the company is supporting authorities in the investigation.
"At Burlington, our hearts are heavy as a result of the tragic incident that occurred today at our North Hollywood, CA store," the spokesperson told Insider. "Our top priority is always the safety and well-being of our customers and associates."
