Two people improperly passed through a security checkpoint at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Sunday, prompting a lockdown at the main gate.
At around 9 p.m., the driver of a vehicle ignored commands from security personnel at the main gate and drove through, according to a press release provided to Insider. After they deployed barriers and stopped the vehicle, two people got out and tried to flee on foot.
One of them was apprehended by security forces. That person had a weapon but no shots were fired, the release said.
On Monday, authorities identified the apprehended person as a 17-year-old male, Joint Base Andrews said in a statement posted to Facebook. He remains in custody.
The second person is still at large.
An investigation is ongoing, and Joint Base Andrews said on Monday that there's "confirmatory evidence that the base intruder on the loose had departed the installation."
Authorities told local outlet WTOP News that there was no active shooter.
As of 3 a.m., Joint Base Andrews has resumed operating at full capacity, the Facebook statement said.
"We appreciate everyone's understanding and patience as the installation was being searched," said Col. Tyler Schaff, 316th Wing and Joint Base Andrews installation commander, in a press release. "The safety of our personnel is always our top priority, and your cooperation helped make it possible for our Defenders and partners to thoroughly and swiftly search the base."
