12 people have been killed at Kabul airport since Sunday as the Taliban say they 'don't want to hurt anyone'
  • Twelve people have been killed at Kabul airport since Sunday, the Taliban and NATO both said.
  • The airport has been the site of desperate scenes as people try to flee Taliban rule.
  • The Taliban told people who can't legally fly to leave the airport: "We don't want to hurt anyone."

Twelve people have died at Kabul airport since Sunday, the day the Taliban took control of Afghanistan's capital city, the Taliban and NATO both said.

Reuters reported the figures on Thursday, citing both the Taliban and NATO.

The Taliban also urged people to leave the airport on Thursday if they did not have the legal right to fly out of the country.

One unnamed Taliban official said, according to Reuters: "We don't want to hurt anyone at the airport."

The official said the deaths were caused by gunshots and stampedes.

It is unclear if the death toll of 12 includes two armed people that were reportedly shot dead by US troops at the airport perimeter.

A NATO official had previously said that 17 people were injured in a stampede at a gate to the airport on Wednesday.

The airport has been a scene of chaos since Sunday as the Taliban took over Kabul as the US withdrew its troops from the country after 20 years.

Hundreds of people have been seen at the airport, with videos showing some climbing a jet bridge to force their way onto a plane, and others clinging to the outside of a C-17 plane in desperation as it moved down the runway. Other videos appear to show people falling from a plane in the sky.

Sky News also reported that women threw their babies over razor wire to soldiers, hoping they would take them.

Afghan civilians, families, and those who helped the US military but now fear retribution from the Taliban are trying to escape.
