100,000 civilians are trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol with no food, no water, and 'constant bombing,' Zelenskyy says
- Ukraine's president said about 100,000 people were trapped in Mariupol in a "complete blockade."
- He said they had "no food, no water, no medicine. Under constant shelling, under constant bombing."
About 100,000 civilians remained trapped in the city of Mariupol without food, water, and electricity, Ukraine's president said.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a speech posted to his Telegram channel on Tuesday: "As of today, there are about 100,000 people in the city, in inhumane conditions, in a complete blockade.
"No food, no water, no medicine. Under constant shelling, under constant bombing."
He said that almost all efforts to get civilians out of the port city had been affected by Russian troops, "by shelling or deliberate terror."
Mariupol, in the southeast of the country, has faced some of the most brutal attacks during Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Some residents have been stuck there for weeks, as homes, schools, and a maternity hospital have been destroyed.
Russian forces bombed a movie theater in the city that was being used to shelter more than 1,000 civilians. It had the word "CHILDREN" written outside of it in Russian.
People were also being buried in mass graves in the city as morgues ran out of space.
