INSTANT MBA: Don't Share Your Huge Goals With Others

Aug 20, 2013, 04:00 IST

Youtube/wheretogetengagedToday's advice comes from columnist Jeff Haden via his post on LinkedIn:

"When other people take notice of an individual's identity-related behavioral intention, this gives the individual a premature sense of possessing the aspired-to identity."

Haden says that once you tell other people your goals, you'll be less motivated to complete them because you've already been offered praise for doing something great, even if you haven't done it.

Although this sounds counterintuitive, Haden advises to try picking a goal and not talking about it right away.

"Don't talk about it: Focus solely on doing the work required to achieve your goal."

"Sometimes declaring what we want to be and how we will get there causes us to feel we are farther along the path of becoming who we want to be, and therefore makes us less motivated — even though we've actually done nothing but talk."
