  • As the travel landscape shifts in response to COVID-19, travelers are considering alternatives to hotels and resorts.
  • RVs and camper vans are enjoying newfound popularity levels, and so is the Airstream trailer.
  • This iconic brand offers a uniquely retro camper van-like experience for standalone accommodations that are ideal for social distancing.
  • We rounded up some of the best Airstream rentals across the US in desirable and scenic spots, ranging in price from $70 and $200 per night to start.

Instantly recognizable for their shiny silver exterior and sleek shape, the Airstream trailer manages to embody both a sense of nostalgia and a futuristic feel. Their vintage flair has made them an American icon with a devoted legion of fans.

Now, that following has grown as a result of the impact on travel from the novel coronavirus, according to Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky. The head of the popular vacation rental site said unique stays like tree houses and Airstreams are "booming" as travelers seek safer, more private alternatives to conventional travel.

Indeed, Airstreams are usually (but not always) located in relatively remote areas, and provide an elevated camping (or glamping) experience that's more comfortable than pitching a tent, and allows for more space, privacy, control, and outdoors elements than a hotel or traditional vacation home rental can provide.

They're also on-trend in the time of COVID-19 when travel has evolved to become more socially distant, with travelers taking road trips over far-flung flights, and booking remote private rentals, customized camper vans, and tricked-out RVs for vacations this year.

Many Airstream rentals are refurbished units from the 1960s and 1970s, blending midcentury appeal with contemporary style, akin to a boutique hotel room. Most come with a bedroom/sleeping area (usually a Queen-sized bed, sometimes with additional single beds or pull-out seating), a dining/living area, and basic cooking facilities. Some come with basic bathroom amenities or offer them separately on the rental site. Models usually range from 25 to 35 feet long, which makes them ideal for a couple, or a small family.

Of course, without a vaccine, there is no firm guarantee with regard to safety. It's crucial to follow guidelines and advice from organizations such as the CDC and WHO, and practice safety measures including wearing a mask, washing your hands, and maintaining social distancing. Additionally, consider your own level of risk, and whether you're traveling from or to a hotspot, so as not to increase the rate of infection.

To help highlight some of the best Airstream trailers, we compiled a list of rentals available to book on Airbnb and Vrbo that met the following criteria:

  1. Airstreams include amenities such as electricity, hot water, and Wi-Fi. Many come with outdoor living space such as a covered picnic area, outdoor hot tub, hammocks, and charcoal grills.
  2. Our picks are located in desirable vacation destinations around the country with easy access to outdoor pursuits and natural beauty.
  3. Listings have availability to book in the coming months, are highly-rated, and priced under $200 per night to start.
  4. Most units are parked on their own plots of land for easy social distancing, and list enhanced cleaning protocols.

What they all offer, is a memorable experience in an American classic. People who stay in Airstreams tend to become lifelong fans of the brand's reputation for cool, retro-glam living.

It's worth noting that cleaning and service fees vary widely, especially post-pandemic, and strict cancellation policies are likely to be in place.

These are some of the best Airstream rentals in the US, sorted by price from low to high.

Book this immaculate Airstream starting at $152 per night on Airbnb

This picture-perfect 1960s-era Airstream has been lavished with so much attention to aesthetic detail, it looks as if it was curated specifically for a glossy magazine photo shoot.

The interiors bask in midcentury modern style with a red-lacquered retro kitchen, low slung couch, dining area, and even a fireplace. The tiki suite in Pensacola, Florida, $160

The tiki suite in Pensacola, Florida, $160
Airbnb
Book the tiki suite starting at $160 per night on Airbnb

Not all Airstreams are renovated vintage units. This 2017 model is a newer offering with a larger living area (six people could stay here, though it might feel tight) and a more tech-forward set up that includes three TVs, a fully-integrated sound system, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning.

The design isn't as fashion-forward as some of our other picks, despite the tiki title, and it feels a bit more like a high-end RV, but quality fabric fittings, multiple beds (including bunks), and a fully-equipped kitchen are complimented by a covered seating area and deck outside.

The scenery is the true standout, however. This home is parked facing the coastal views of the Santa Rosa Sound and beyond that, the shimmering Gulf of Mexico waters. The unit is set up in a private corner of an RV park, with Pensacola itself just under an hour's drive away, or head the opposite direction to explore the Point Washington State Forest.

Booking is limited until early October.

Airbnb
Book base camp starting at $183 per night on Airbnb

This beautiful model is a 34-foot Excella from 1984 with a double and two single beds to easily host four people.

It will suit guests already amenable to outdoor life, and although it has some useful amenities (Wi-Fi, hot water), it will appeal to those who love to grill their dinner in the open air and maybe even sleep in a hammock under the stars when the mood takes them.

The interiors maintain their retro roots with ample light wood and vibrant prints, and the listing offers a smidge more room other units on this list. The biggest draw, though, is the plum location. There's a strong sense of isolation, self-contained in its own clearing in the woods, near Hudson Highlands State Park with exceptional hiking trails.

There is scattered availability in September, with greater options beginning in October.
