  • Sony's newest flagship headphones, the WH-1000XM4, are now available for preorder for $349.99.
  • The fourth-generation headphones follow the company's highly rated WH-1000XM3, which are our current pick for the best noise-cancelling headphones you can buy.
  • Upgraded features on the new model include expanded smart control and improved noise cancellation.

Sony's WH-1000XM3 are among the best wireless over-ear headphones on the market. In fact, the WH-1000XM3 are our pick for the best noise-cancelling headphones overall, beating out other highly rated models from Bose and Sennheiser. And now, two years after their initial release, Sony has officially unveiled the next-generation successor to the WH-1000XM3 — the appropriately named WH-1000XM4.

Marked by a few notable improvements, the WH-1000XM4 headphones are designed to build upon everything buyers liked about the previous model, while adding some key upgrades. The WH-1000Xm3 are known for their impressive noise cancellation, and Sony says that the new headphones offer even better performance thanks to a new Bluetooth Audio System on Chip (SoC) and an improved algorithm for the headphones' HD Noise Canceling Processor QN1.

The new headphones have a proximity sensor and two acceleration sensors to enable an auto-pause/resume feature when you take the headphones off or put them on. They also offer pairing support for two Bluetooth devices at the same time, which was a notable feature missing from the previous model. That way, you can have them paired to both your phone and laptop, for example.

New Edge-AI technology, developed in partnership with Sony Music Studios Tokyo, has been integrated as well, and it is designed to analyze music and help restore quality lost during compression.

Below, we've broken down full preorder and spec details for the Sony WH-1000XM4, including pricing and retailer purchase options.
