HBO's new mystery series, 'The Third Day,' will stream a unique live episode on October 3 — here's how to watch

HBO's new limited series, "The Third Day," debuted on September 14. The drama features a unique structure, with two distinct parts consisting of three episodes each, and a special live episode that's set to air in between both parts.

"The Third Day" focuses on a man, Sam (Jude Law), and a woman, Helen (Naomie Harris), who both travel to a mysterious British island at separate times. The locals on the island appear to be hiding a dark secret and wish to hold onto their traditions no matter the cost. The first part, starring Law, is titled "Summer," while the third part, starring Harris, is titled "Winter."

Unlike parts one and three, the second part of the series won't consist of three episodes. Instead, the special "Autumn" installment will actually take the form of an immersive theatre event set to be filmed and broadcast live from London in one continuous take with no cuts.

"The Third Day" also stars Katherine Waterston, Emily Watson, and Paddy Considine. The show is created by Dennis Kelly and Felix Barrett. Kelly is best known as the creator of the conspiracy thriller "Utopia," while Barrett is the Artistic Director of the British theatre company Punchdrunk.

Reviews for "The Third Day" have been mostly positive. The show currently holds a "75% Fresh" rating on review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.

How to watch "The Third Day"

To watch "The Third Day" you'll need a subscription to the HBO cable channel or HBO Max streaming service. The first episode premiered on September 14 and new episodes will debut every Monday night at 9 p.m ET through October 19.

In addition to the regular Monday night episodes, a special "Autumn" episode will stream live through HBO's Facebook page on October 3. The unique installment will run 12-hours starting at 4:30 a.m. ET, offering an immersive real-time experience that focuses on a day in the life of the show's characters.

The HBO network is available through numerous pay-TV cable and satellite packages. HBO Max is a standalone streaming service with all of HBO's movies and shows, plus a ton of extra WarnerMedia titles.

HBO Max costs $14.99 per month. You can sign up for the service through the HBO Max website. HBO Max is also offered as a paid add-on to other streaming platforms, including Hulu, Apple TV, and YouTube TV. No matter how you sign up, new HBO Max customers can receive a free one-week trial.

The HBO Max app is available on several connected devices, including Apple TV, Android, PlayStation, Xbox, Chromecast, and Samsung smart TVs. Unfortunately, Roku and Fire TV products do not currently include access to the HBO Max app.

Outside of the US, "The Third Day" will be broadcast on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
