India’s students reportedly take the most after-school classes compared to peers

According to a recent study, Indian students take the most number of tutoring lessons after school compared to peers in other countries. They were also the most engaged in extra-classes and co-curricular activities with over two-thirds students seeking lessons in key subjects after school.

According to the study, most students engaged in tuition classes for mathematics, physics and chemistry than any other subject. About a quarter do so to prepare for engineering and accounting careers.

In an effort to get better results, students took online courses other than their prescribed school syllabus. Also, nearly 40% school students said they spent two to four hours every day on homework along with spending almost the same time during the weekend.

A majority – about 74% students enroll in extra-curricular activities. While about 72% said they actively played sports, but only 3% played sports for more than six hours a week, The Indian Express reported.

Debate-related activities were the most followed extra-curricular lessons among school students (36%) followed by science, arts and book clubs.

The Cambridge International Global Education Census report was conducted across 10 countries and surveyed over 4,400 teachers and 3,800 students from India.
