India’s IIT Ropar makes it to the top 500 global universities for the first time

• India’s elite Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar has featured on the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020 for the first time.
  
• It has been ranked between 301-350.
  
• On the gender equality front, IIT, Ropar accounts for 13 female students in correspondence to 87 male students.
  
• The other four of the 23 prominent Indian institutions ranked include Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur.

While only six Indian universities featured in the top 500 list of Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020, India’s elite Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar has been featured in the list for the first time, ranking between 301-350 among the 1,400 universities on the list.

The rankings are analysed on the basis of the score points for its teaching, industry income, research, international outlook and citations. The institute was given 36 points for its industrial income with 100 points for citations.

With the increasing demand for artificial intelligence, automation and machine learning, IIT Ropar focuses on research facilities, majorly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subjects. It also has research labs and strong industrial partnerships.

IIT Ropar has 13 female students for every 87 male students.

The other four of the 23 prominent Indian institutions ranked include Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur.

“The Indian government has strong ambitions to boost the global standing of its top universities and attract foreign students, academics and research collaboration. It needs to back them up with high levels of investment and increasing global competition,” THE rankings editor Ellie Bothwell told TOI.


Globally, the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, California Institute of Technology, United States and University of Cambridge, UK were the top performers in the rankings.
