Indian Railways is going to start constructing the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor by next year. This was confirmed by the Railway board member (traffic) Mohammed Jamshed, during the chief commercial managers' conference in Mumbai.

"Work on the hi-speed railway corridor will begin next year," he said.

Some issues involving acquisition of land still remains a hurdle. Railway administration wants a bullet train terminal to be built in Bandra-Kur la Complex (BKC), but the state government is offering a plot at Bandra Reclamation. The Railways are not keen on the Bandra Reclamation land and the Niti Aayog and the prime minister's office are expected to take the final call.

The administration is planning to run its first bullet train by 2023 and it is expected to cover the the distance between between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in about two hours, running at a maximum speed of 350 kmph and operating speed of 320 kmph.
