Indian Netflix viewers fastest in the world to binge watch a whole series! And it’s not drama or comedy that sets Indian viewers on a binge spree

It wasn’t really a tough task for Netflix to get India binging on Netflix right from the moment it was launched on the 6th of January this year. Shows like House of Cards, Narcos and Orange is the new Black were popular way before the internet television network was launched in India. India was part of the company’s global launch along with 130 markets around the world.

And almost instantly the online streaming company set the Indian netizens on a binge spree. Some of the most popular shows for 2016 in India included widely popular political drama House of Cards, science fiction series Stranger Things and the recently launched biological story of Queen Elizabeth's reign, The Crown. And most importantly viewers in India were way faster than the rest of the world to binge watch a series in one go! Netflix users in India were likely to finish off a TV series over 3 days, when the global average was four days for some of the globally popular shows including Narcos. And it wasn’t comedy or drama that got the Indian viewers hooked, the most devoured genre in India was Sci-Fi where viewers enjoyed series like Sense8 and Ascension.

However, it wasn’t so easy to get the Indian viewers hooked, the company found that viewers did not base their decision to finish a series on the first episode alone. On average, it took 4 episodes for a viewer in India to get hooked on a show.

And just Netflix users around the world users in Indian followed the trend of pairing their TV binge with a movie right after. Some interesting pairings include Fuller House followed by Piku; Orange is the New Black with The Big Short; Gilmore Girls with Silver Linings Playbook; Stranger Things with I Am Legend, Bloodline with BA Pass.

Apart from having to manage its way around the network issues in the country, Netflix is trying to keep the Indian viewers binging on its shows in 2017 by premiering shows simultaneously in India and doing away with waiting time – by adding local content including the first Indian Netflix original TV series based on Vikram Chandra’s Sacred Games that will be produced in partnership with Phantom Films – and of course by partnering with king of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan for his movies.
