All you need to know about the combat-ready CH-47 Chinook helicopter inducted by Indian Air Force

Indian Air Force on Monday formally inducted four US-made Chinook heavy-lift helicopters at Air Force Station 12 Wing in Chandigarh. Two hangars and logistics facilities were created for the Chinook helicopters.

India has spent nearly $1.5 billion for 15 Chinook helicopters which are capable of deploying troops and machinery at high altitude location.

“The induction of the CH-47F(I) Chinooks is an asset to the Indian Air Force's airlift capabilities. This modern, multi-mission-capable, heavy-lift transport helicopter will enhance our heli-lift capability across all types of terrain to full effect,"said Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa.

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is developed by an American Company Vertol and Boeing Rotorcraft Systems. It is currently operational in more than 19 countries including UK, Japan, UAE, and South Korea.

The Chinook has a maximum capacity to carry 11 tonnes and 45 troops. Additionally it has underslung capacity to load 10 tonnes.

Besides this, they can be used for medical evacuation, disaster relief, and recovery operations. Additionally, the helicopters can also lift the M-777 ultra howitzers -- a towed 155 mm artillery piece

The CH_47 Chinook helicopters are multi-mission heavy lift transport vehicles which will be used to move troops, artillery,ammunition, supplies and equipment on the battlefield.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) received its first CH-47F (I) Chinook on February 10 at the Mundra port in Gujarat.The entire fleet of 15 Chinook helicopters is expected to arrive by March 2020.
