Post independence, India’s map underwent many changes, which involved the reorganization of states and provinces. Here’s a list of the first 10 states established in the post-independence era. Remember that these were not the only states created, many other states found their way on the Indian map in the years to come.

Before getting statehood in 1950, Assam was a part of the Kamarupa Kingdom. It was reorganised as the North-East Frontier Province in 1874, Eastern Bengal and Assam in 1905, and Assam Province in 1912.

Initially a part of the Bengal province under British India, it was founded as Bihar and Orissa province and was later given the status of Bihar province. Finally, in 1950, it achieved the status of a state.

Madhya Pradesh was a part of the princely state of Makrai and the princely states of the former Eastern states agency. Later in 1950, it became a state.

Odisha was a part of Bihar and Orissa province, before it became a state in the year 1950.

Initially created as the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, Uttar Pradesh got the status of a state in the year 1950.
