Here are the 10 Indian states and union territories with the highest unemployment rate, according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for the period July 2023 to June 2024.

Lakshadweep​

Lakshadweep tops the list with the highest unemployment rate, where 36.2% of the total population is unemployed. The disparity is stark between genders, with a striking 79.7% of females compared to 26.2% of males facing unemployment.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands​

Andaman & Nicobar Islands, with a total unemployment rate of 33.6%, also highlight a significant gender gap. While 49.5% of females are unemployed, 24% of males remain out of work.

Kerala​

Despite its high literacy rate, Kerala struggles with unemployment at 29.9%. While 47.1% of females are jobless, 19.3% of males face the same issue, showing a gap between males and females.

​Nagaland​

Nagaland shows a more balanced but high unemployment rate, standing at 27.4%. Interestingly, males are slightly more affected (27.9%) than females (26.6%).

Manipur​

Manipur's overall unemployment rate is 22.9%, with females at 27.5% and males at 19.9%. The numbers indicate how the region faces a persistent challenge with job creation.

Ladakh​

Ladakh grapples with an unemployment rate of 22.2%. The gender gap here is notable, with 38.3% of females and 11.4% of males unemployed.

​Arunachal Pradesh​

At an overall 20.9% unemployment rate, Arunachal Pradesh faces a grave challenge. However, the gender gap is less stark here, with 21.9% of males and 19.6% of females unemployed.

Goa​

Goa recorded an overall unemployment rate of 19.1%. While 13.2% of males are unemployed, the female unemployment rate shoots up to 31%, indicating the need for more inclusive job opportunities.

With an overall unemployment rate of 18.8%, Punjab's females face a tougher job market (24.5%) than their male counterparts (16.7%).

Andhra Pradesh​

Andhra Pradesh rounds off the list with an unemployment rate of 17.5%. Females have a slightly higher unemployment rate (19.7%) compared to males (16.4%).
