The world’s largest cricket stadium, Motera Stadium, in Gujarat is bracing itself for a grand opening. It’s not a nail-biting cricket match but a political event ‘Kem Chho Modi’ which will be its inaugural. The event hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi could be his quid pro quo to Trump’s gesture where he hosted ‘Howdy Modi’ in Houston.

The stadium which is equipped to host matches even during rain - will be inaugurated by the US President Donald Trump during his India visit between February 24 and 25. Motera Stadium is built at the cost of ₹700 crore (about $100 million) over a span of two years.

Modi is known to have promised Trump that the event will have 5-7 million attendees, 1,000 times the number of attendees at the Howdy Modi. The promise comes after Trump was unhappy with the numbers that the Texas event could draw.

Modi’s promise might be tall and wide as the newly built stadium can accommodate a tad over 100,000 people with its 95,000 seating capacity and 5,000 standing capacity. Moreover, the population of the entire state is 6 million.

PM Modi and Donald Trump are likely to address the gathering together.

“During a phone call over the weekend, President Trump and Prime Minister Modi agreed the trip will further strengthen the United States-India strategic partnership and highlight the strong and enduring bonds between the American and Indian people,” said White House press release.

Motera being decked up

The Gujarat government is aggressively working to beautify the stadium and its surroundings. New lights are being installed at the parking lot of the stadium.

As many as 16 roads leading to Motera Stadium including some internal roads that weren’t repaired in years - were refurbished. The local authorities are also repairing the pedestrian footpath with new paver blocks.

Moreover, the civic body is also planning to beautify the entire route from Ahmedabad airport to the stadium with over 1.5 lakh flower pots - that will cost ₹2 crore. They are also planning to install decorative lighting along the route. This is in spite of the fact that Trump may land directly at the stadium in a helicopter. Sources say the government is spending close to ₹50 crore in all

After the event, Trump is likely to visit Gandhi Ashram.

Ever since Modi became PM in 2014, his hometown Gujarat has been the preferred choice to host international visits. Previously, Chinese president Xi Jingping and the Prime minister of Japan Shinzō Abe and Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu have visited Gujarat.
