India’s Atmanirbhar (self reliance) package announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in May 2020 included the promise of an agriculture infrastructure fund worth ₹1 lakh crore ($135 billion). Now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled the details of the plan and these are the key highlights. What is the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund?
The government will spend ₹1 lakh crore over the next four years.
Year | Proposed allocation |
2020-21 | ₹10,000 crore |
2021-22 | ₹30,000 crore |
2022-23 | ₹30,000 crore |
2023-24 | ₹30,000 crore |
Total | ₹1 lakh crore |
Under the scheme, the central government will bear about 3% interest subsidy and guarantee loans up to ₹2 crore or less up to seven years. Modi noted that around 11 of the 12 public sector banks have already signed a memorandum of agreement with the Agriculture Ministry.
The loans taken must be used to build cold storage, collection centres and processing units etc, which will allow farmers to protect their perishable produce for a longer period of time and get better prices for them.
