Hours before Vikas Dubey was killed in an encounter, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court over the ‘fake encounters’ of the five men by the Uttar Pradesh police.

The petition also claimed, according to Bar and Bench, that Dubey’s “custody has been obtained by UP police and there is every possibility of UP police restoring to kill him and other remaining accused in fake encounter, as the police have killed five accused and thus, there is extreme urgency in the matter.”

The petition was filed by an advocate and petitioner-in-person Ghanshyam Upadhyay.

“The issue involved in the petition is the killing of five accused by U.P police in a fake encounter relating to the incident of killing of eight policemen at Kanpur on 02-07-2020,” said the petition.

Earlier, five members of the Vikas Dubey gang have been killed in police encounters over the past seven days.

Vikas Dubey’s encounter

Gangster Vikas Dubey was shot when he reportedly tried to flee, following a road accident in which the vehicle he was travelling in overturned. He was killed after being critically injured in an alleged shootout with STF officials.

According to reports, as the convoy bringing Dubey from Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain reached Bhauti area under Barra police circle in Kanpur on Friday morning, the vehicle in which Vikas was seated, overturned after skidding on the road due to heavy rain.

Vikas, along with two other police personnel in the vehicle, was injured in the accident.

As soon as Vikas was taken out of the vehicle, he allegedly snatched a pistol from the STF team and tried to fire at the police. He was fatally injured in retaliatory firing.

Vikas received a bullet injury on the chest which proved fatal.

Two STF personnel were also injured in the encounter.

STF officials admitted to the incident but refused to reveal the extent of injuries suffered by the gangster.

“Bad scriptwriters”

The Special Task Force is now facing flak for its botched-up operations. A senior police officer, who has been one of the founding officers of the STF in Uttar Pradesh said, “The Special Task Force (STF) now has very bad scriptwriters, and the Vikas Dubey story proves it. Why would someone, who had surrendered on Thursday in Madhya Pradesh to escape being killed, try to escape on Friday.”

“The biggest failure of the STF is its failure to track down the gangster who was in Kanpur for two days after the massacre. We investigated a similar case of Shri Prakash Shukla in 1997-98 and tracked his every movement before the encounter. Dubey was using his mobile in between, but the STF could not pin him down,” the officer said, according to IANS.

A retired DGP, meanwhile, said that Vikas had been eliminated to save some political leaders.

“The entire scenario is crystal clear. His photographs with politicians, top government officers had been going viral on the social media, and it is obvious that he was better dead than alive. The people know what is the truth and the issue will snowball into a major controversy, ” the DGP said, according to IANS.
