Toll waiver announced for light motor vehicles in Mumbai ahead of assembly elections

• The Maharashtra government has waived tolls for light motor vehicles at all five tolls in Mumbai.
• This will allow commuters to enter and exit Mumbai without having to pay a toll.
• The toll waiver has been announced ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in the state.

In a relief for travellers, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday announced a full toll waiver for light motor vehicles (LMVs) at all five toll booths for entry into Mumbai ahead of the crucial assembly elections in the state.

The toll waiver will be implemented from midnight on Monday, Shinde said. With this, light motor vehicles, will not have to pay anything while entering Mumbai from any of the five entry points.

Light motor vehicles include small vehicles designed for carrying passengers or goods. This includes cars, jeeps, vans and small trucks.

This includes all five tolls – Airoli Creek Bridge, Anand Nagar, Dahisar, Mulund, and Vashi.

The toll collection at these toll booths started in 2002 and the current toll is ₹45 and ₹75.

The decision to waive the tolls was taken at the government’s final cabinet meeting ahead of the elections.

According to the government, over 3.5 lakh vehicles travel up and down using these tolls, including 70 thousand heavy vehicles and over 2.8 lakh LMVs. This will benefit the 2.8 lakh vehicles that use these tolls twice a day.

"Today, the government has decided to exempt light vehicles from toll after 12 midnight. The time that people used to spend in queues will be saved. The government was discussing it for many months and today this revolutionary decision has been taken,” said Dadaji Dagadu Bhuse, Minister, Maharashtra Government.
