Unsteady monsoons are still playing havoc with one’s vegetable budget. The prices of most vegetables spiked in August versus July, with the exception of — bottle gourd.

Tomatoes still on fire

The usual suspect, tomato, is still unreachable to most people, as its prices shot up by 48 percent in August, month-on-month. However, there is another vegetable which tops the inflation chart.

No cap on capsicum prices

Capsicum, the red, green and yellow vegetable which is used in most Chinese dishes, has turned ultra expensive in August with prices soaring as much as 191 percent.

Just tomato prices can’t influence retail inflation all by itself, but if it’s mixed with potato and onion prices, it could, says SBI Ecowrap. Tomatoes, onions and potatoes are the most essential vegetables in most Indian kitchens.

Fortunately, onion prices came down by 6.8 percent, while onion prices went up by 3.9 percent in August, as per a Business Standard report.
