Supreme Court rejects Tamil Nadu government’s plea seeking 50% OBC quota in medical colleges

• The Supreme Court has dismissed the pleas filed by the Tamil Nadu government seeking 50% OBC (other backward classes) reservation in the All India Quota seats.
• The SC verdict comes a week after the central government informed the Supreme Court that it is not possible to extend reservations to OBCs for medical seats.
• Earlier, the Madras High Court asked the central government to form a committee and decide on providing reservation to OBC students.
  

The Supreme Court has dismissed the pleas filed by the Tamil Nadu government seeking 50% OBC (other backward classes) reservation in the All India Quota seats in State-run medical colleges for this academic year.

Political parties from Tamil — including the ruling government AIADMK and the DMK — challenged the Central government’s decision to not grant 50% OBC reservation in medical seats for undergraduate, postgraduate, and dental courses in 2020-21.

The SC verdict comes a week after the central government informed the Supreme Court that it is not possible to extend reservations to OBCs for medical and dental seats in Tamil Nadu.

Earlier, the Madras High Court asked the central government to form a committee and decide on providing reservation to OBC students in All India Quota (AIQ) medical admission. However, the court directed that any changes in the reservation will not be applied in the current academic year.
