Special flights for Indian students and nationals living in Ukraine amid conflict with Russia

• The Indian embassy in Ukraine has advised Indians to leave the country temporarily amid heightened uncertainties.
• There are reportedly about 20,000 Indians currently residing in the European country.
• To bring back Indians stranded in the foreign land amid war-like situations, Air India has started special flights from Ukraine from today, February 22, till February 26.

Increasing war-like tensions between Russia and Ukraine have led people living in Ukraine towards a state of panic, especially those from foreign countries including India.

India has openly addressed the precarious situation and advised Indians living in Ukraine to leave the country.

Russia-Ukraine conflict
The Russia Ukrainian war is an ongoing and protracted conflict that started in February 2014 over geopolitical issues. The situation has now become dangerous after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into two separatist regions of Ukraine, raising concerns of a conflict.

To stop Russia from doing so, US President Joe Biden had prohibited trade and investment between US individuals and the two breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine. Adding to it, western countries have also threatened to impose sanctions on Russia if it invades Ukraine.

What about Indians living in Ukraine?
Reports suggest that there are around 20,000 Indian students and nationals living in the European country.

The Indian embassy in Ukraine has suggested Indian nationals in Ukraine, particularly students, to leave Ukraine temporarily and asked them to avoid non-essential travel within the country amid several uncertainties.

The majority of students in Ukraine study in medical colleges, which have been quite popular for the last couple of decades.

How is the travel situation between India and Ukraine?
To bring back Indians stranded in the foreign land amid war-like situations, Air India has started a special flight to Ukraine from today, February 22, till February 26.

Reports said that the Dreamliner B-787 aircraft, with a capacity of over 200 seats, has been deployed for the special operation.

The flights will operate from Boryspil International Airport, Ukraine's largest airport.
