Yet another act of violence broke out at breaks at the India’s premier central university — Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on Sunday evening. Masked goons had entered the campus, attacking students and teachers with wooden and metal rods.

The situation in the university was tense for the last few months over a hostel fee hike. It had aggravated as students too participated in Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.

“Masked miscreants armed with sticks are roaming around, damaging property and attacking people,” said JNU registrar.

Violent attacks — vandalising property and hostel rooms

Nearly 50 masked goons — allegedly from ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) — entered the premises vandalising property and injuring hostel students.

“Hostel rooms, and lobbies were vandalised during the assault while several vehicles standing on roads were damaged by the unidentified miscreants,” said IANS.

“They have split into 2 groups. One group going from hostel to hostel. One outside Sabarmati Dhaba T-Point and other going to Brahmaputra Hostel,” NDTV reported.

Due to the attacks, nearly 50 students are admitted to AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), along with a few teachers. As per reports, Sucharita Sen, faculty of Centre for the Study of Regional Development, was also admitted over a head injury.

"These were not small stones, these were big stones that could have broken our skulls. I fell on the side and when I came out, I saw cars being completely vandalised including my car," Professor Atul Sood told NDTV.

Aishe Ghosh, student union president was “brutally beaten up”

The president of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), Aishe Ghosh was also injured during the attack.

"I have been brutally attacked by goons wearing masks. I have been bleeding. I was brutally beaten up and I don't know who they were," she told IANS as blood flowed profusely from her head.

The JNUSU has been protesting over hostel fee hike for a month now. According to reports, the students’ union had also locked up registration rooms, restraining students from enrolling for the next semester.

On Saturday, this led to clashes between the JNUSU and ABVP students. Police officials were also deployed outside the campus.

Fascists in control, says Rahul Gandhi

Soon after the news of masked goons barging the campus and beating students surfaced, Delhi Chief Minister Arwind Kejriwal tweeted, "I am shocked to know about violence at JNU. Students attacked brutally. Police should immediately stop violence and restore peace. How will the country progress if our students will not be safe inside the university?"

Several Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi also showed concern. “The fascists in control of our nation, are afraid of the voices of our brave students. Today’s violence in JNU is a reflection of that fear,” he said.

On the other hand, Congress leader P Chidambaram tweeted, "If it is happening on live TV, it is an act of impunity and can only happen with the support of the government.”

Row over Citizenship Amendment Act

The students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have been aggressively protesting against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The student union also asked Delhi citizens and university students to hit the streets for an "undeclared emergency" in Jamia Millia Islamia.

"Emergency Protest Demo for JMI. All students & citizens of Delhi are appealed to assemble at Delhi Police Headquarters, ITO...to ensure that the undeclared emergency in JMI is lifted," Mint reported citing JNU student union.

CAA will make illegal migrants from six religions and three countries — Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan — eligible for Indian citizenship.

Protest over hostel fee hike

In November, hundreds of university students had taken to the streets, holding placards in protest of fee hikes in November. According to the student union, the institute raised hostel, mess and security fee by 400%. However, the fee hikes were partially rolled back after the protests broke — but the students continued to protest demanding a complete rollback.

They had also imposed hostel curfews and a dress code — which did not resonate well with the students either.
