IN PICS: Farmer protests erupt across India against the country’s new agricultural bills

  • Farmers across India are protesting the new agricultural bills passed by Parliament last week.
  • Pictures show protestors shouting slogans, creating chakka jaams, and leading sit-ins to block highways to voice their concerns.
  • Farmers took to the streets in multiple states, including the national capital New Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and even Jammu and Kashmir.
Farmers are protesting across the country against the Agricultural Bills passed by the Central Government last week. From Maharashtra to New Delhi, people were seen blocking roads and voicing their concerns declaring today a ‘Bharat Bandh’ (India is closed).

The Bandh was called for by several farmers’ organisations, including the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU), Indian Coordination Committee of Farmers Movements (ICCFM).

Soon after the announcement came, police tightened the security. In the national capital, Delhi Police and paramilitary increased their presence. More deployments were called in areas bordering Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

After today’s Bharat Bandh, the farmers have decided to converge at the memorial of Lal Bahadur Shastri in Delhi on October 2 to register their protest.

Here’s a journey in pictures of the protests against the new Agricultural Bills that were seen across India today:
