Odisha reports 63 new cases, 90 more people recover from COVID-19

Bhubaneswar, May 29 () The total number of COVID-19 cases in Odisha increased to 1,723 with 63 more people testing positive for the highly infectious disease on Friday, a health department official said.

As many as 90 people were discharged during the day from different COVID-19 hospitals as they had recovered from the disease. The number of people who have so far recovered from the deadly disease has risen to 977 while the total number of active cases was 737, the official said.

He said now the number of recovered cases is more than the active cases in the state, which is a good sign. Seven people have died of the disease so far in the state.

However, the health and family welfare department in a clarification said in case of the deaths of two COVID-19 patients, the reason for the fatalities was not connected to coronavirus.

A 72-year-old man from Balasore district who was suffering from blood cancer and other chronic ailments had tested positive for COVID-19 but succumbed to his chronic ailments. As per the death audit report, the cause of death is chronic myelogenous leukaemia, the department said in a note.

In regard to the death of a 42-year-old man from Khurda district who had also tested positive to COVID-19, the department said he was suffering from chronic liver disease and Hepatitis B and succumbed to his chronic ailments. As per the death audit, the cause of his death is decompensated liver disease with Hepatitis B, the department explained.

Of the fresh cases, 61 had recently returned to the state from different states like Maharastra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattishgarh, Telangana and Delhi. All of them were in quarantine from where they have been detected positive for COVID-19. Two others were detected with the infection as a result of contact-tracing exercises, he said.

The new cases were reported from 15 districts. The maximum of 12 fresh cases were found in Khurda, followed by 11 in Jagatsinghpur, nine in Dhenkanal, seven in Nayagarh, six in Bolangir and four in Ganjan districts.

Three cases each were reported in Balasore and Cuttack, two in Sundergarh and one each in Puri, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Koraput, Jharsuguda and Nabarangpur.

Similarly, 90 patients including 23 from Jagatsinghpur, 22 from Jajpur, 21 from Bhadrak, 15 from Ganjam, three from Cuttack, two each from Khurda and Sambalpur and one each from Balasore and Nayagarh, recovered from the disease. The total number of recoveries now stands at 977, the official said.

The department on Thursday conducted 4,259 tests. The total number of samples tested in Odisha has increased to 1,43,570, the official said.

The districts which reported more than 100 COVID-19 cases were Ganjam (398), Jajpur (253), Balasore (142), Khurda (122) and Bhadrak (106). AAM RG RDM RDM
