Odisha COVID-19 death toll rises to 11, number of cases to 3,909

Bhubaneswar, Jun 14 () The COVID-19 death toll in Odisha mounted to 11 with one more person succumbing to the disease while 186 new cases were detected in the state taking the total tally to 3,909, a health department official said on Sunday.

A 50-year-old man from Ganjam district who had tested positive for COVID-19 died while undergoing treatment at a hospital, according to a statement by the health department.

He was also suffering from diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the official said, adding Ganjam has so far reported six deaths, Khurda four and Cuttack one.

Three other COVID-19 patients have also died in the state, but their deaths were attributed to other reasons.

Among the 186 fresh cases are 13 members of the disaster response teams who returned from Kolkata after cyclone Amphan restoration works. With this, the number of disaster response personnel getting infected with the virus has increased to 149 in Odisha.

Of the new cases, 171 patients were detected from quarantine centres where the returnees from different states are lodged.

The maximum number of cases was reported from Kandhamal where 22 people were found COVID-19 positive, followed by 21 in Khurda, 16 each in Kalahandi and Bargarh, 15 in Gajapati, 13 in Mayurbhanj and 12 each in Jajpur and Cuttack.

Meanwhile, 114 patients recovered from the deadly disease taking the total number of cured cases to 2,708 which is 69.27 per cent of the total tally. Up till June 13 midnight, 2,00,014 swab samples have been tested in the state, the official said.

Of the total 3,909 COVID-19 cases in Odisha, 1,187 are active.

So far, 13 of Odisha's 30 districts have reported more than 100 cases.

Meanwhile, Ganjam district, which received the highest number of migrant workers, and has registered 682 cases, imposed lockdown from Sunday keeping in view the possibility of community spread of the disease.

The district administration extended the lockdown period from existing 12 hours to 19 hours a day till June 30. While the state government has imposed 10 hours night curfew from 7 pm to 5 am across Odisha, Ganjam district allowed the people to venture out of the houses from 7 am to 12 noon for essential purposes.

The weekend shutdown imposed by the government will also continue till June 30 in the district along with the lockdown in other days, sources said.

"Total lockdown will follow in Ganjam district from today onwards up to June 30. Till today, there was no community spread of COVID-19 in the district," Ganjam district collector V A Kulange said.

In view of the Raja Parba festival, different districts have banned gatherings of more than seven people. AAM RG NSD NSD
