The ‘State Ranking Index' report under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), has ranked states and union territories on the basis of their food and public distribution processes, vital for ensuring that no one goes hungry.

Odisha topped the list of general category states while Tripura topped the list of special category states.

In the general category, followed by Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat were ranked in the top positions. In the special category, after Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Nagaland took the top positions in the food security index.

Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) is a government scheme launched in 1997, in which states were required to identify the poor and deliver foodgrains to them in a transparent manner.

NFSA is based on the idea of food security that ensures all people have access to basic food at all times and lead a healthy life.

“The most notable reform is the national-level implementation of the ambitious One Nation, One Ration Card plan, which enables beneficiaries to draw subsidized food grains from any fair price shop of their choice anywhere in the country,” said Piyush Goyal, union minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution.
