Hyderabad, June 12 () Telangana continued to witness a spike in COVID-19 cases on Friday, with 164 fresh cases and nine deaths being reported, taking the tally of positive cases in the state to 4,484 and fatalities to 174.

All the new cases are reported from different parts of the state and no fresh case was found among migrants, foreign returnees and others, a state government bulletin said.

Out of the 164 fresh cases, 133 were reported from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area, the epicentre of COVID-19 infection in the state.

The bulletin said 2,278 people have been discharged so far, while the number of active cases stood at 2,032.

Official sources said a team of senior medical officials examined all patients undergoing treatment in the state-run Gandhi hospital, where COVID-19 positive cases are treated, and reviewed their health condition.

The examination came against the backdrop of rising deaths of COVID-19 patients in the state.

Junior doctors in the Gandhi hospital, who abstained from work in protest against the attack on a doctor by kin of a deceased COVID-19 patient on Tuesday night and over their demands, including decentralisation of coronavirus patients treatment, resumed duty today after health minister E Rajenders assurance to address their grievances.

Meanwhile, a day after a driver of GHMC Mayor was found positive for the virus, the Mayor B Rammohan reportedly got tested for COVID-19 on Friday.

Visuals of a sample purportedly being collected from his throat was shown on TV channels. SJR BN WELCOME BN WELCOME
