Maharashtra launches mobile legal aid Clinic for prisoners at Thane Central Jail

A mobile legal aid clinic has been launched at Thane Central Jail in Maharashtra to improve communication between prisoners, their families, and legal representatives, a report in PTI revealed. The initiative, introduced by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in collaboration with the social organisation ‘Dard Se Humdard Tak,’ aims to tackle the significant delays inmates face in connecting with their loved ones and accessing legal counsel.
The clinic, inaugurated on Monday, operates through a specially designed vehicle that offers an e-interview system. This innovation allows inmates to communicate more effectively, reducing the long waiting times often associated with in-person meetings. Officials hope that this will help address the overcrowded prison system’s challenges, making it easier for inmates to stay in touch with their families and receive timely legal assistance.
Despite its benefits, the e-interview system has its challenges. Many prisoners and their families, particularly those who are illiterate or unfamiliar with technology, struggle to access the service. Recognising this, the DLSA and its partners are providing hands-on support at the clinic. Legal experts from ‘Dard Se Humdard Tak’ will be available two days a week, offering free legal services and guidance from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to ensure that all inmates can use the system effectively.
Chief Judicial Magistrate S.K. Fokmare talked about the importance of this initiative, saying that it enhances prisoners’ rights by ensuring they maintain essential connections with their families during incarceration. The clinic also helps inmates receive the legal support they might not otherwise have access to due to financial constraints or lack of awareness.
Jail Superintendent Rani Bhosale, present at the launch, noted that the mobile clinic would significantly improve the quality of life for inmates, especially regarding legal support.
