Mumbai, May 17 () Maharashtra on Sunday recordedthe highest single-day spike of 2,347 COVID-19 cases and 63more deaths, including 38 from worst-hit Mumbai, taking theoverall case count to 33,053 and the number of fatalities to1,198, a Health official said.

A total of 600 patients were discharged from hospitalsearlier in the day, taking the number of the recovered casesto 7,688 so far, he said, adding that the state now has atotal of 24,161 active cases.

Among the total COVID-19 cases and fatalities, Mumbaialone accounts for 20,150 patients and 734 deaths, he said.

In view of the growing cases, the state governmentearlier in the day extended the ongoing curbs until May 31,hours before the national lockdown was extended for thesimilar duration.

"Of the 63 fresh deaths, 38 were reported from Mumbai,nine from Pune, six from Aurangabad, three each from Solapurand Raigad, one each from Thane district, Panvel city, Laturand Amravati, taking the total tally of the COVID-19 deceasedto 1,198," he said.

Pune, another coronavirus hotspot, has so far reported3,464 coronavirus positive cases and 188 deaths, he said,adding that the entire Pune division has so far reported atotal of 4,325 cases and 224 deaths.

The Thane division, which consist of Mumbai city, hasreported 25,130 cases and 811 deaths.

The Nashik division has recorded 1,295 cases and 78deaths followed by the Kolhapur division with 191 infectionsand five fatalities, he said.

The number of coronavirus cases in Aurangabad standsat 1,069 with 32 deaths.

The Latur division, also in Marathwada, has reported123 cases and six deaths so far, he said.

The Vidarbha region has reported 511 cases and 29deaths due to COVID-19. Nagpur's tally was 368 cases and threedeaths, the official added.

A total of 41 people from other states are currentlyundergoing treatment in Maharashtra while 10 such patientshave succumbed to the infection so far, the official said.

He said the state has so far conducted 2,73,239 testsof which 2,40,186 samples were found to be negative while33,053 others tested positive.

"The country carries out 1,630 tests per 10 lakhpopulation whereas Maharashtra is conducting 2,137 (tests),"he said.

The number of active containment zones in the statestood at 1,688 and 14,972 health squads have completedsurveillance of 63.83 lakh people.

The official said a total of 3,48,508 people arecurrently under home quarantine and another 17,638 underinstitutional quarantine.

Maharashtra COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positivecases 33,053, new cases 2,347, deaths 1,198, discharged 7,688,active cases 24,161, people tested so far 2,73,239. ND VTNSK NSK
